The Real Montreal

Le Plateau-Mont-Royal (English: The Plateau) is a borough of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Plateau-Mont-Royal takes its name from its location on relatively flat terrain north of Sherbrooke Street and downtown, and east of Mont-Royal. The borough is bordered to the north and north-east by the Canadian Pacific railroad tracks; to the west by Park Avenue and the intersection of Pine Avenue and University Street; and to the south by Sherbrooke Street.

The Plateau-is well-known for many reasons :

It is near downtown

It is close to many cultural institutions and places of entertainment.

It enjoys two of Montreal’s largest public parks: Lafontaine park and Mont-Royal Park and mountain, which is immediately adjacent to it.

It boast of a multitude of restaurants and specialized boutiques.

It shows a great architectural diversity.

It is serviced by three metro stations (Sherbrooke, Mont-Royal, & Laurier) and has a vast bicycle path network.

It has a great number of educational institutions of all levels, including ENAP the 'École nationale d'administration publique, the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, the Conservatoire d'art dramatique de Montréal, the École nationale de théâtre du Canada, the 'Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec and École secondaire F.A.C.E, recognized for its innovativel teaching methods.

Montreal's trendiest neighbourhood

In the 1980s, the area's bohemian aura and proximity to McGill University attracted gentrification. As rents increased, many of its traditional residents and businesses were dispersed to other parts of the city. The neighbourhood continues to gentrify, and it is now home to many upscale restaurants and nightclubs, and any number of trendy clothing stores have their place along this strip of St-Laurent and St-Denis.">

Montreal’s Typical Staircases

An interesting feature of the architecture of Montreal, is the use of stairs outside residential building. You can see them in all kinds and shapes in the Plateau. The explanation? A typical Montrealerway to save space and heat inside the home, following a 19th century law that required to leave a space in front of residential buildings to ensure the workers a minimum of greenery in front of their home.

Lively Streets

The is known internationally for its many streets full of cafés, restaurants, bookstores and specialty shops of all kinds. Rue St-Denis, Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Avenue du Mont-Royal, Duluth and Prince Albert streets are the best known, but there are many more to discover.

Neighbourhood Restaurants

The reputation of the restaurants inThe Plateau is recognized everywhere. In almost every street, you can find all kinds of neighbourhood restaurants answering all tastes and all budgets. A walk in any directionwill take you to new discoveries.

Lafontaine Park

With its 40 hectares, LafontainePark is the largest in The Plateau. For over 100 years, this trendy urban park has remained a favorite spot for Montrealers. Surrounded by Victorian homes, it is crossed by a beautiful bike path and is home to towering trees, small plazas, public art and two large ponds connected by a waterfall.
